Update on the proposed Makro development
In a letter dated 5 May 2016, the Office of the Gauteng Premier advised that the Provincial MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development had considered the Makro appeal and on 28 April 2016 had resolved that it be upheld and that the proposed Magaliessig Extension 68 Township be approved with certain conditions.
At this stage no reasons justifying the making of this decision have been provided and therefore MAF does not yet know what factors were considered in arriving at the approval.
As you would expect, as your suburb’s representative body in this matter, MAF is actively dealing with it. The strategy that MAF adopts has to be sound and is therefore being formulated with the robust input and advice of professional legal and town planning consultants.
As one step, subject to affirmative legal advice, MAF intends to approach the High Court to take the decision to approve the Makro development “on review” in order to have the decision set aside; a process that if successful could lead to the Province having to hold a completely new hearing.
MAF is confident that you appreciate both the complexity and the sensitivity of this issue and therefore the information MAF imparts will necessarily have to be limited. We also ask that residents do not speculate publically on this matter nor spread rumours. Please rest assured that MAF is serious when it says it is acting on your behalf to do everything legally possible to stop this totally inappropriate development within our residential area.
